After Your Red Oak, Irving, Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Dallas Dental Appointment
Dental Tips & Treatments
It’s normal to have sensitivity, tenderness, speech difficulty, some pain, and perhaps even some bleeding after dental procedures. These symptoms can vary from person to person. Our team at Allheart Dental strongly believes in keeping patients well-informed about all possible aspects of their treatment – after all, it’s important to us that you’re able to recognize the ways you’re feeling and handle them effectively so as to minimize discomfort once you’re at home.
The following is a list of typical issues that you may experience following certain procedures, as well as recommended remedies for how to best handle them:
After Crown & Bridge Treatment
Typically, both crowns and bridges take anywhere from 2-3 appointments to complete. In the meantime, once we’ve prepared your teeth, we’ll place temporary pieces you can wear until your new, permanent restorations are created. During and after this process, your lips and tongue may become numb due to your teeth being anesthetized. We recommend that you avoid eating or drinking anything hot until the numbness is worn off. It is also normal to experience some temperature and pressure sensitivity after each appointment. This should end a little while after the final restoration has been placed. In the meantime, mild pain medications may be taken.
While wearing a temporary, it’s important to stay away from sticky or hard foods. You may even want to chew on the opposite side of your mouth so as to avoid damaging the restoration. Brushing normally is all right, but flossing should be done very carefully; otherwise, the temporary could be dislodged. If your temporary crown or bridge does come loose, please call our Red Oak, Irving, Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Dallas, TX office as soon as possible so that we can put it back in place.
After Composite (White) Filling Placement
If anesthetic is used, your tongue and lips may become numb for several hours following the placement of your new filling. It becomes incredibly easy to burn yourself with hot food/drink or bite your lip during this time, so be sure to exercise caution. Some sensitivity is also normal. Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or aspirin can be taken to alleviate tenderness, and you’re free to chew with your filling as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. If excessive sensitivity or pain persists after a few days, please contact our office.
After Root Canal Treatment
It’s not uncommon for a tooth that’s received a root canal to feel uncomfortable or aching following treatment. You may also experience sensitivity when biting or a feeling of looseness. These are all normal and should subside within a few days. Feel free to take Ibuprofen or Tylenol to relieve pain; our office may recommend a prescription pain reliever and/or antibiotic. Please call our office if any unpleasant symptoms persist after several days.
